Actors Protest in Kolkata over Saradha Probe0
KOLKATA: The supporters of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the Bengali film industry, led by actor-turned-MP Dev, on Friday took to the streets protesting against the CBI probe into the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam.
West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee had led an unprecedented protest march on Monday and criticised the BJP Government at the Centre, calling the CBI probe a “witch hunt”. She had then asked the people in the film industry here to organise a protest march.
Several film and soap opera actors marched a short distance amidst high security by Kolkata police. A large number of people thronged the streets to get a glimpse of their favourite stars.
Renowned painter Shuvaprasanna, who usually leads such marches, was conspicuous by his absence. The painter, who was interrogated by the Enforcement Directorate twice for his involvement in the scam, has been avoiding another round of questioning, for which the ED had summoned him again.
The Opposition parties, however, questioned the integrity of the protest march and asked whether they knew what they were doing by opposing a probe by the central agency into a scam, in which 17 lakh of people in the state were cheated. “This rally was in favour of the right to steal people’s money. We will organise a march in the city on December 2 to exhort the right of the people to prevent such loot of public money,” said state BJP president Rahul Sinha.
