BHUBANESWAR: With the ruling BJD determined not to allow any debate on the chit fund scam during the ongoing winter session of the Assembly, the Opposition has decided to intensify its agitation at the block and panchayat levels demanding resignation of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik over the issue.
The Assembly, which will pass the Appropriation Bill on Monday, is likely to witness noisy scenes over the issue. Congress and BJP MLAs apprehend that the House is likely to be adjourned sine die on Monday after passing of the Bill.
The Opposition is, however, prepared to participate in the Appropriation Bill discussion. “We are prepared to participate in the discussion if the ruling BJD members do not disrupt the proceedings of the House,” Leader of the Opposition Narasingh Mishra said and added that the chit fund issue can also be raised during the discussion on the Bill.
Leader of the BJP Legislature Party Basant Panda also said the BJP MLAs are ready to participate in the discussion. “We will raise all issues concerning Odisha during the discussion,” he said.
Stating that the BJD also wanted a discussion on the chit fund issue in the House, Government Chief Whip Anant Das said the main issue now is how to return money to the depositors. But only the Speaker can decide whether to allow a discussion on the issue in the House or not, he said and called upon the Congress and BJP members to participate in the Appropriation Bill discussion.
However, the Leader of the Opposition criticised the double standard of the ruling party and said the Chief Minister had also announced that BJD is prepared for discussion on any issue to be raised by the Opposition in the House. But most of the time the ruling party members disrupted proceedings to avoid discussion on the chit fund scam, he said.
After the CBI interrogation of DIG of police and former DIG of the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) Rajesh Kumar, doubts have cropped up over the probe conducted by the State Government into the chit fund scam, Mishra said and demanded that the Speaker should allow discussion of the issue in the Assembly.
